A handpicked selection from Nicolas at Modal wines, for Mortimer House Kitchen.
(Burgenland, Austria) Joiseph - Mischkultur 2019
A 'field' blend of 6 varieties, meaning that they are all grown together in the same vineyard, harvested together, and vinified together. This wine is fresh and highly drinkable but also has just enough texture, a lovely aromatic profile, and is very immediate. Joiseph is a collaboration between three friends that started with the 2015 vintage and has grown from a tiny hectare to nearly five hectares. The wines across the range are distinct, wildly exciting, and full of energy.
(Liguria, Italy) Possa - Cinque Terre Amphora 2019
Very unique blend of the hyper-local varieties Bosco and Albarola, grown on steep cliffs at the water's edge. The wine sees 5 days of skin contact, and is aged in amphoras for 9 months. Vinified and bottled with zero additions, super pure and transparent. This medium/full bodied white has a gorgeous rounded texture, unique herbal edge, dense fruit, and a pronounced saltiness to reflect its provenance. Truly one-of-a-kind.
(Douro, Portugal) Folias de Baco - Renegado 2019
Super light red or dark rosé from high altitude vineyards in northern Portugal. This is a blend of over twenty local varieties all mixed within the vineyards, and roughly 50/50 red and white. They're all vinified together and macerated for two days to create a super juicy and vibrant light red meant to be enjoyed chilled. Bright red fruits and citrus notes. Made by Tiago Sampaio, a grower who took over his Grandparents' vineyards and 2007 and has progressively become one of Portugal's most sought after natural wine producers.
(Piemonte, Italy) Borgatta - Lamilla 2015
Aged Dolcetto from a 83-yr old producer. Rustic, complex, showing beautiful development with notes of coffee/ tobacco. Proper stuff. We often call this one our 'baby Barolo.' Made by Emilio Oliveri, who has been working a tiny 2 hectares of land since the 60's with his wife Marisa. Now in his 80's, he is still going strong and still producing some of the best Piemonte wines we have come across in a very long time. These are wines ‘come si faceva una volta,’ a representation of tradition, of old methods, and of pure dedication. Wines infused with the energy of two of the kindest souls one is ever likely to meet.
